This isn't very good protection against snoopers, because anyone can show hidden folders with a simple settings tweak. If you're just looking to hide a couple of folders from view, Windows has a built-in option to do so. Option One: Hide Any Folder with a Single Checkbox So, we've rewritten the article with instructions on how to hide and/or password protect files, with information on how secure each method really is. It causes loads of problems for many users who don't know what they're doing, and the password does nothing to protect you from snoopers-you might as well just hide the file. To do so, press and hold ALT and type in the number 255 from the numeric keypad and hit Enter. By default, it will be named as New folder. This could be done by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting New > Folder. In the Change Icon for Folder window, move to the right, select the invisible icon, then click OK. Head over to Windows 10 desktop and create a new folder. Click the Customize tab, then select Change Icon in the Folder Icons section. You can still find this trick all over the internet, but we do not recommend using it. Right-click on the folder and select Properties. It involved hiding a folder on your system and using a "password" to unhide it-even though any user could still unhide it without the password.
